Eighteen-year-old Jud Pitcher takes work at a newly built Dakota railroad town just before winter cuts it off from the world. Left with a dog, a cat, livestock, bitter storms, wolves, and dangerous outlaws, he must turn an abandoned settlement into a fortress and survive until the trains return.
